A Life of Gratitude

A Life of Gratitude

Reflections on Colossians 3:15–17

As we move through this season of thanksgiving, our hearts naturally turn toward gratitude. But in Colossians 3:15–17, Paul invites us into something deeper than seasonal thankfulness—he calls us to cultivate a life marked by gratitude in every moment.

This kind of gratitude is not just an emotion; it is a posture. A way of living. A steady rhythm shaped by the peace of Christ, the Word of Christ, and the name of Christ.

Gratitude Begins With Peace

Paul opens this passage by urging believers to “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.”
This peace is not simply a calm feeling—it is Christ Himself reigning over our thoughts, our reactions, and our relationships.

When His peace rules, gratitude grows naturally. Peace quiets the inner noise, softens the hard places of the heart, and opens our eyes to see God’s goodness even in difficult days.

Gratitude Grows Through the Word

Paul continues: “Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you.”
This isn’t a casual relationship with Scripture—it is saturation.

When the Word dwells richly, it fills us. It reshapes our instincts. It teaches us how to respond, how to encourage, how to forgive, and how to live wisely.

The more God’s Word fills us, the more reasons we find to give thanks.

Gratitude Becomes a Way of Life

Paul concludes with a sweeping statement:
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Gratitude isn’t meant for just the high points—it belongs in the everyday moments:

  • in how we speak to our family

  • in how we serve our neighbors

  • in how we work, rest, decide, and worship

Everything we do becomes an opportunity to express love for Jesus and gratitude to the Father.

Why This Matters for Us at The Well

Our desire as a church is not simply to be thankful people for one season, but to be a community shaped by gratitude year-round.
When Christ rules our hearts, when His Word dwells in us, and when His name defines our lives—gratitude becomes the natural overflow.

A grateful church is a joyful church.
A grateful church is a peaceful church.
A grateful church is a powerful witness to a watching world.

A Prayer for This Season

Lord, let Your peace rule in our hearts.
Let Your Word dwell richly in our minds and homes.
And may everything we do be done in Your name—
with grateful hearts that honor You.
Amen.
